Arp Galaxy Observations

by Hilary Jones

This web page shows a selection of the galaxies from Halton Arp 's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. I have submitted 100 of the best pictures for the Astronomical League's Arp Peculiar Galaxy Observing Program , but I continue to photograph the other Arp galaxies as they become well-situated.

I used a PlaneWave CDK 12.5" telescope on a Paramount MX mount, which is located in my suburban observatory in Northern California at latitude 37° 49' N, longitude 121° 59' W, and altitude 109m. I took all the pictures using an SBIG ST-10XME camera with an Astrodon Luminosity filter. I used CCD Commander to automate the process, and TheSkyX to control the scope and camera.

Except as noted, each picture is a stack of six exposures of 300 seconds each. I used MaxIm DL, CCDStack2, and Photoshop CS4 to calibrate and stack the exposures, make a negative image, and stretch the contrast to bring out the faint features. Occasionally I did some selective sharpening to bring out features in the nucleus, and brushed away dust donuts that my calibration procedure didn't quite remove.

In the following tables, the seeing is given by the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of a typical star's profile, expressed in arc seconds; and the sky darkness is expressed in magnitudes per square arc second (mag/sq"). Both values were measured directly from the image, so they differ from what would have been measured at the zenith. I did not use a Sky Quality Meter to obtain the sky darkness, although that data is available upon request.

Arp 1 has a pair of arms extending from a faint bar in a very symmetrical pattern. Arp 285's galaxies are both spirals oriented at right angles with respect to each other. The arms of the NE galaxy are indistinct. It is said to have a jet pointing to the NE, but we would need much better seeing to capture it. The arms of the SW galaxy stand out clearly.

Image of Arp084Notes: aka the "Heron". This is two galaxies interacting strongly. The larger S galaxy forms the body of the heron. It is a spiral with one stubby arm starting in N and curving quickly to E, and another extended arm that starts in S and curls CCW up towards the companion. The companion is more compact, with a condensed core and two arms curling CW. This forms the head of the heron. The two arms of the two galaxies seem to connect, but don't do so smoothly; so it's possible they aren't related.
