Arp Galaxy Observations
by Hilary Jones
This web page shows a selection of the galaxies from Halton Arp 's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. I have submitted 100 of the best pictures for the Astronomical League's Arp Peculiar Galaxy Observing Program , but I continue to photograph the other Arp galaxies as they become well-situated. I used a PlaneWave CDK 12.5" telescope on a Paramount MX mount, which is located in my suburban observatory in Northern California at latitude 37° 49' N, longitude 121° 59' W, and altitude 109m. I took all the pictures using an SBIG ST-10XME camera with an Astrodon Luminosity filter. I used CCD Commander to automate the process, and TheSkyX to control the scope and camera. Except as noted, each picture is a stack of six exposures of 300 seconds each. I used MaxIm DL, CCDStack2, and Photoshop CS4 to calibrate and stack the exposures, make a negative image, and stretch the contrast to bring out the faint features. Occasionally I did some selective sharpening to bring out features in the nucleus, and brushed away dust donuts that my calibration procedure didn't quite remove. In the following tables, the seeing is given by the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of a typical star's profile, expressed in arc seconds; and the sky darkness is expressed in magnitudes per square arc second (mag/sq"). Both values were measured directly from the image, so they differ from what would have been measured at the zenith. I did not use a Sky Quality Meter to obtain the sky darkness, although that data is available upon request. To see a list of the Arp galaxies on this web page, click here |

Notes: Arp 1 is the spiral to the upper left, while Arp 285 is the pair of galaxies to the
lower right. Arp 1 has a pair of arms extending from a faint bar in a very symmetrical
pattern. Arp 285's galaxies are both spirals oriented at right angles with respect
to each other. The arms of the NE galaxy are indistinct. It is said to have a jet
pointing to the NE, but we would need much better seeing to capture it. The arms of
the SW galaxy stand out clearly.

Notes: Two galaxies. One larger galaxy has two long arms connected to central bar. The smaller
one is located within the extent of the larger one. The whole effect is an angel with
one arm raised and a halo over her head. Arp characterizes this as a three-arm spiral;
but even in his picture, the short third "arm" doesn't really seem to extend into
the nucleus.

Notes: Very small galaxy with a hook shape. Perhaps reaches a dwarf galaxy near the main
galaxy's edge. There's another companion nearby to the SW, and there is said to be
an arm that connects it to he main galaxy, but it's barefly visible at best in my
photo. Arguably there's a long tail that reaches out to another more remote galaxy
to the NW.

Notes: Spiral seen at an angle. Very prominent arm on the rear side, and a straight arm on
the front side. The straight arm seems to disappear, then reappear very dimly on the
E. Traces of other dim arms may surround the galaxy on all sides. Companions on the
E and SW don't have an obvious connection.

Notes: aka the "Heron". This is two galaxies interacting strongly. The larger S galaxy forms
the body of the heron. It is a spiral with one stubby arm starting in N and curving
quickly to E, and another extended arm that starts in S and curls CCW up towards the
companion. The companion is more compact, with a condensed core and two arms curling
CW. This forms the head of the heron. The two arms of the two galaxies seem to connect,
but don't do so smoothly; so it's possible they aren't related.

Notes: Arp 88 itself is the very small galaxy in the center of the picture. It has a slight
elongation in NW/SE direction, and a possible tidal tail heading due E. The much larger
and brighter galaxies to the E comprise Arp 119. One of these is an elliptical galaxy,
while the other is a distorted spiral galaxy with an arm pointing N to the elliptical.

Notes: Four galaxies. Central is elliptical. It might have extensions in various directions;
but would need longer exposure to confirm this. To N is a dramatic spiral with prominent
bar and two long arms extending to N and S. To the WNW of the central galaxy is an
edge-on spiral. It may have a slight extension towards the central galaxy. To the
ESE of the central galaxy is an elliptical galaxy with no obvious connection to the
others.

Notes: Also known as Keenan's system. Two galaxies. The northern galaxy is a face-on spiral
with a pronounced hook to the W, and a tidal tail leading S and connecting to the
southern galaxy and then continuing through it into a counter tail The southern galaxy
seems to be featureless. The spiral has a bar oriented ESE to WNW.

Notes: The most prominent galaxy in the center is elliptical. It has some rough features
to the ENE. Then further to the ENE are a pair of ellipticals that are very close

pointing back to the central galaxy. There are 8 or more smallerr galaxies in the
area, probably considerably farther away than the main galaxies.

Notes: Two relatively featureless galaxies in close assocation. Star clouds merge between
them, and one extends off in a thin tidal tail to the WNW, leading to a very small
companion.. There is another companion to the ESE with a very weak connection at best,
and third to the WSW with no connection at all.

Notes: In the center there are two galaxies and a star, or three galaxies, all connected
by an irregular shaped cloud, which has one faint plume coming off NW side and heading
NE. There is also a broad fan of material on the S side. Two other galaxies are on
the SE and SW, but they have no obvious connection to the central group.

Notes: Two small spirals seen face-on or at an angle, Broad diffuse clouds surround each
one. No obvious connections between them; but might expect one if longer exposures
were used. Arp notes a westward filament from the W galaxy. It could be argued that
this is in my picture, but longer exposure would be needed to be sure.

Notes: Centermost galaxy shows weak broad spiral arms. There are 2 or 3 small featureless
galaxies nearby. One to the ENE is very close and seems to be connected to the central
galaxy. There is an even smaller object between them that could be a star, another
galaxy, or a knot in the central galaxy's arms. Farther away to the ESE is another
small galaxy, slightly elongated in the NE to SW ddirection. There is no obvious connection
to the central galaxy. There are some other galaxies in the area too.

Notes: Spiral with asymmetric arms farther out. Most prominent is an extended arm on the
W that forks, with the longer arm swinging CW down to the S and back close to the
nucleus. There are also two very faint arms heading to the N. Arp describes them as
"tangent to the NE side of the galaxy". Some of the arms seem to cross to the ESE.

Notes: This looks like two face-on spiral galaxies that are very close together and merging.
The lower one has a very bright nucleus with a single bright arm looping away CCW
to the East and then down to the SW. The weaker upper galaxy, which could just be
part of the lower galaaxy, has a weak arm swing CCW from N to E. The two galaxies
are connected by a knotty bar; and there are at least two weak spiral arms extending
rather far away from the grouping.

the S, There could be a hint of a tidal tail at the bottom leading off towards the
second galaxy to the E, which is an elliptical with no features. There might be a
slight ring far outside the nucleus; or it could be an artifact. (But the Arp Atlas
confirms the ring.) This photo is a stack of just 3 images (15 minutes total), so

Notes: Two galaxies. The larger is a spiral with two arms. One starts on the S and swings
W, while the other starts on the NW and swiings CCW all the way around to parallel
the other arm. The net effect is two arms on the same side of the galaxy, with no
arm in the NW. The second galaxy is highly disstorted spiral, whose NW arm might be
leading back to the larger galaxy.

Notes: A large somewhat chaotic spiral with several pronounced knots on the arms. It has
a smaller companion to the ENE, which is even more chaotic. I cannot see a bridge
between them, but it seems likely that they encountered one another in the past. The
image is centered on the smaller galaxy by mistake.

Notes: Two interacting galaxies at nearly right angles. On the N is a vertical galaxy seen
edge-on, with an especially strong arm to the N, and a knotty structure in the core.
It is said to have a vertical filament extending to the N, but this is barely visible
in my photo. To the S is a spiral seen at an angle. It has weak arms that are slightly
stronger to the ENE and WSW. It is surrounded by a very faint ring.

Notes: Faint knotty smudge in the center, and a spiral to the SW. The spiral has knotty arms,
which might extend rather far from the nucleus. Arp sees a diffuse hooked counter-tail

and/or longer exposure time to separate the tail from the background.

a diffuse cloud. Extending to the NW is a thin weak plume that lines up with the other

fans out more. Many knots and dust lanes in the arms. This should actually be cataloged

angle. Bright object inside it is a star. NGC7318A and B are the pair of galaxies
that are in a horizontal line and quite close to each other. One bright arm swings
out from A going CCW from NE to SE, while a dimmer arm swings out from N side of B
and heading towards NGC7319. That in turn is known to be a spiral galaxy but is too
diffuse to see here. But there is a very faint long arm leading to the ESE. The picture

the other two are ellipticals. Fairly extensive halos, but they don't seem to connect.
My image is not framed well. Turning the camera 90° and recentering the scope would
allow two more large galaxies and many smaller ones to appear in the image. My database
uses RA and dec values that do not center the whole chain very well. A better center
would be NGC 383 (the bottom of my picture).
